Neumann KM84

Neumann KM84

The KM84 is a small diaphragm cardioid condenser. From my understanding, this microphone is Neumann’s “general” cardioid mic. This vintage series was replaced by the smaller black 100 series.

Recording Services owns two of these little condensers. Unfortunately, only one of them really works correctly. The other went through some modifications, and although has a different impedance (thus a slightly changed frequency response) it has the ability to add an unbelievable amount of cracking at any moment. These mics do not get much use at MSU, and while at Interlochen they were used on woodwind for the top orchestra, or tapped on by conductors confused between recording and live microphones.

The Banff Centre also carried one, and only one, so I still have yet to get an even stereo recording with a pair.
