Electrovoice RE20

Electrovoice RE20

This monster microphone is used exclusively in radio broadcasting. The RE20 has been slowly replaced with the more tweaked RE27, however both are moving-coil (dynamic) cardioid microphones. They are so robust that we use them on the kick-drum and low bass instruments. The RE27 is tweaked to have less proximity effect and filters against P-popping and breath sounds.
I’ve seen this microphone in every professional radio studio, including Interlochen Public Radio. If you want to sound “big” on the radio, this is the microphone of choice. In classical recording, I don’t use this microphone often. Usually I save it for special situations, like mic’ing a concert bass drum or running out of microphones.
